Run Less, Run Faster 16 Week Marathon Training Program

I started running 3 years ago and have become completely addicted.  I ran my very first half marathon last April and am debating running a full marathon.  I'll keep you posted if this idea blossoms info a full blown desire to complete 26.2 miles.  Anyway, running has become my addiction but it has also started to burn me out.  I started reading the book Run Less, Run Faster.  They have this amazing program where you only run 3 times a week...HARD...and you cross train 2 times per week...HARD.  This training program is supposed to keep runners from getting burnt out, to prevent less injuries, and to make you FASTER as a runner!  Brilliant!  I completed my first speed workout last night!  I was sweating like crazy and it was tough but I completed it.  My goal is to complete this entire training program over the next 16 weeks.  I'll keep you posted.

Run Happy!

Timpanogos Half Marathon Review

Three years ago I started running short distances with friends and grew to love the adrenaline boost, added endorphins, and sense of accomplishment that accompany finishing a run.  I worked my way up in mileage and decided I wanted to train and run a half marathon.  I completed my first half marathon in April at the Thanksgiving Point Half.  It was amazing but extremely hard as there were a lot of rolling hills.  I decided I wanted to train better and harder and attempt a second half marathon.  I researched half marathons in Utah and read reviews before finally deciding upon running the Timpanogas Half Marathon.
Packet pick-up was held at the Traverse Outlets in Lehi for two days prior to the race.  It was extremely well organized and the staff was very energetic and helpful.
Race day required an early wakeup call of 3:15 AM as racers had to be shuttled from Lonepeak High school up American Fork Canyon to the start line.  I picked up my running partner Amber at 4:00 AM, arrived at Lonepeak High school at 4:15 AM, loaded a shuttle at 4:20 AM, and reached the start line at 5:00 AM.
The start line set up was awesome!  There was a large parking lot area set up for group yoga before the race.  Behind the parking lot was a long line of portable bathrooms and behind that was the Start Line!  When we arrived we still had an hour before the race began so we participated in the group yoga session to warm up and stretch our muscles.
There was anticipation and excitement in the air as we lined up behind our trail markers before the race began.  Amber and I snapped a few pictures on my iphone(that doubles as my ipod during races) and waited patiently with the other runners for the race to begin.  At 6:10 Amber and I crossed the start line and we were off!  The beginning of the race was a little congested as we were limited to one lane for runners and one lane for traffic coming or leaving the canyon.  The congestion lessened after the 2 mile marker as runners found their pace.
The canyon was gorgeous.  We watched the sunrise hit Timpanogos Mountain as we ran on the paved road next to the stream.  Early riser campers were set up along the way to watch and cheer us on!  There were break stations set up along the trail about every 3 miles that included water, Gatorade, Gu, oranges, and the lovely portable bathrooms.  Almost 8 miles of the race were downhill through American Fork Canyon.  The scenery was breathtaking and watching the sunrise was my favorite part of the race.
After making our way down the canyon we turned onto the Murdock Trails which gave a nice change of pace as this area was more level.  There were a few small hills but nothing too steep to climb.  We made our way through the trail and looped our way through neighborhoods towards the final home stretch.  My legs were aching from the downhill portion of the race but I had set out to reach a goal of two hours and ten minutes (10 minutes faster than my previous time).  I turned on a good song and picked up the pace.  Near the finish line a huge group of spectators were present to cheer us on!  It gave me such an adrenaline rush that I sprinted towards the finish line.  I reached the finish line in 2:06:30.  I was so proud of myself!  After crossing the finish line a staff member was right there pushing water bottles into our hands and adorning us with our medals!  It was a very victorious moment for me.  I had just beaten my previous race time by 14 minutes!
Amber and I took some photos at the finish line and made our way through the line of racers to grab some post-race food.  I instantly guzzled down a glass of icy cool chocolate milk and reached for a banana, hoping it would help with my recovery.  I passed up on the smoothies, chocolate chip cookies, and Great Harvest Bread as my hands and mouth were completely full and occupied.  I wish I would have grabbed a slice of that Great Harvest Goodness. Next time.
Overall, I absolutely loved the Timpanogas half and plan on running this race again next year.  It was well planned, organized, and full of breathtaking views.  Three of my favorite things!  I recommend this race to all levels of runners.  I only wish I had trained running downhill a little more as my legs were definitely sore for a few days following the race.  See you at the start line next year!

Running in the Rain

For the life of me I cannot seem to get out bed in the morning to work out before my I have to be at the office...partially because of laziness, partially because I have been having this awful sinus pressure in my head.  I used to set my alarm for 6:00 AM in the hopes that one of those morning I would miraculously jump out of bed with endless energy.  Well I've had no such luck and was feeling more and more sleep deprived as I would sleep restless(guiltily) for the next hour and a half.  So this week I decided I was going to just do afternoon workouts and let my body rest!  It's been great so far.  Mind you I love to get in my workouts before my day starts but right now my body is not even considering that as an option.

So yesterday was a little cloudy with little rain storms here and there...nothing too crazy.  I thought a little run in a slight drizzle would be a nice way to cool down as the afternoon runs are super duper HOT that time of day!  Well I started my run in a nice drizzle and ended my run in a Niagara Falls downpour!  Once during my run a car pulled over with an adorable couple who asked if I needed a ride home...they were obviously concerned for my safety:)  I told them "thank you very much but I'll be fine"!  That run was intense but so much fun!  Lightening was flashing all around me and the thunder was deafening.  Not sure how safe it was to be out running around in it but it was a lot of fun!  I have always loved the rain.  I don't know what it is...maybe it's the way it makes me want to curl up on a cozy couch next to a fireplace with a good book and a cup of cocoa...or how I want to put on a pair of wellies, a trench coat, grab my umbrella and run outside in search of large puddles to jump in!  Or maybe it's because the best movies always have the most romantic scenes in the rain.  Whatever the case I love the rain.  And yesterday I loved running in the rain.

Next time you consider not running outside because it's raining...just try it!  You might love it!

Happy Running!

My First Half Marathon-Thanksgiving Point

April 27th, 2013
Thanksgiving Point Half
Time: 2:19

My Experience:
Couldn't sleep the night before because I was so nervous for my first half!
Taped up Ams(my running partner) leg in the car
We watched other runners like stalkers to see if they were going to wear their jackets(We had no idea)!
Made it to the start line 3 minutes before we had to start running
We had a moment of silence for the Boston Marathon bombing victims
I had to go to the bathroom so bad the first three miles...porta-potties never looked so good!
Felt very shaky until mile 6...where I had my first GU!  Amazing!
Gardens were gorgeous
Lots and lots of hills
Figured out I can't drink water and run at the same time
Reached the golf course...more hills
Mile 9 started using my music...gave me a great adrenaline rush
Mile 11 legs felt like jello!
Amber coached me along
Mile 12 felt like a dream.
Mile 13 I got a huge adrenaline rush...
sprinted the last .10!
Finished!
Saw Dustin and I wanted to cry...I had completed my first half marathon!
It felt amazing, exhausting, & exhilarating all in one!

3 mile run+6 mile bike ride=good night for fish tacos

Warm weather please stay, we want to play!

This weeks firsts:

1. First time I didn't wear a coat when I left the house since October!
2. First time I ran outside without wearing my Nike running jacket since October!
3. First time I haven't seen my breath in the morning since October!
4. First time I have overheated running outside since September!
5. First bike ride I've been on in ages!
6. First time making fish tacos!
7. First time being on a bike ride with my hubby!

I'm beginning to think October was the culprit! Old man winter sure had his fun this year. I'm glad to see that guest go...he's almost overdone his welcome!!

Today was the warmest day this year...so we had to celebrate!

Ams and I completed a 3 mile run.

Dustin, Andrew, Ashley, and I enjoyed a 6 mile bike ride.

And Dustin and I enjoyed scarfing down some much needed fish tacos!(Recipe Below)

Happy Thursday! Xoxo

Fish Taco Recipe:

Combine:
2 Tbsp Olive Oil
1 Tbsp Chili Powder
1 tspn lemon zest(grate the peel of a lemon)

Place two fish fillets in sauce.  Make sure to coat the entire fish with sauce and then place in skillet over medium heat.  Cook all the way through(7-10 min).  Remove from heat and cut into small pieces.

Combine (for sauce):
1/2 cup Sour Cream of Greek Yogurt
1 Tbsp Lemon Juice

Place a few flour or wheat tortillas on griddle or in skillet to make nice and crispy.

Make coleslaw or if you are like me just buy a ready made bag:)

Serve with avocado, lemon&lime wedges, rice, and coleslaw mix!

Bon Appetite!

Running&Rejuvinating

I'm working on making my weekends permanently longer...5 days long outta do it!  Weekends are those glorious few days that we get to regain sanity from the work week.  Its those few days that we get to unwind, slow down, indulge in a good book, take a long run, sleep off to dream world whenever you please, or slip away on a mini vacation.
That last paragraph made it seem as though I just love to lounge around on my weekends, which I do, but I also have a tiny problem with always needing to feel as though I have been productive.  How is this for a productive Saturday:
Wake up(yes this is an accomplishment as it is always hard to leave my warm bed)
Run 5.0 Miles:)
Breakfast with on of my favorite gals (Em) at on of my favorite places (Kneaders)
5 loads of laundry
Bleaching any and all hard surfaces in my house
Taking out the garbage
Dusting
Organizing
Polishing
(Yes I have a cleaning problem...the problem is I love it!)
Nap
Full pedicure&manicure(Via my hubby.  love you. xoxo.)
Dinner at Cafe Bella Rue with the hubby and our favorite couple...the DaBells
Cazookies
Movie Night
Dream Land
